I was involved in this year's FOSS4G conference in Nottingham, and will write a more substantial piece for that for my BtOR later. For now I wanted to share with you the fact that the conference's Map Gallery was mentioned on the website of WIRED (http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2013/09/foss4g-map-contest/), the popular US magazine that reports on how emerging technologies affect culture, the economy and politics.
A useful website where you can transform OpenStreetMap data to GIS data (Shapefile, GML, KML, etc):

Downloads are limited to extent size (but much larger then on the OSM site itself), and in time (one download per 24h).
PDOK Products and Services have been created and published unlocking spatial data from the Dutch Government. The data is available as a web service or as a downloadable file opening the door to the development of pretty interesting applications.
