Map projections and flowmaps of airlines
Objective:
Keywords:
Description:
- Description: Airlines have the need to advertise their (global) network of destinations on a map to inform potential travellers. Many airlines these days are part of an alliance that expands the airline’s destinations through codeshare or other cooperation’s. The partner networks are often also visualized in the same map. This results in visually cluttered maps only indicating it is busy in the sky. Usually, the connection between the airports is indicated by different thin colored lines. From a symbol design perspective not much can be done.
- How can map projections help to ’unclutter’ the map? Which map projection best show airline networks? How to deal with both local and temporal differences in the airline network density? Is there a role for digital globes? How to deal with map representations for print and on-line?
