Research title:
Making space/time data actionable

Research question:
How to use large data sets to improve understanding of spatial processes
Description of research interests:

Most of the below is joint work with colleagues: Calisto, Izquierdo, Kobben, Morales, Ostermann, Zurita-Milla. Past work has been carried out with various PhD students.

My research efforts centre around a number of topics:

  • developing technological solutions to support professionals in their daily activities with spatial information, especially in developing countries; the bulk of this effort in recent years has been in context of smallholder farming systems the STARS project (www.stars-project.org).
  • development of robust design and realization methods of sptiotemporal information systems,
  • develop technology to turn linguistic geographic information into spatial data, especially in context of VGI; done with Ivana Ivanova, Gaurav Singh and Victor de Graaff.
  • I also have a few small pet projects, on illegal trade in wild parrots, and illegal fisheries affecting albatross populations; carried out with Ron Clarke of Rutgers University.

Many of my MSc students do projects in the context of the above topics.
