The ITC SEMA project team has conducted its kick-off workshop in Dar es Salaam earlier this week. Today, a workshop was held at the IST-Africa conference and this weekend a Hackathon is being held at the ‘Innovation Space’ at the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), a kind of hangout, similar to the playgrounds at Google.

25 participants have signed up to develop and integrate software components, relevant to the SEMA project. We have defined 7 challenges for them to work on, see the Hackpage at the SEMA website:

Playing with Google maps

Google has recently launched a game called Cube with which you can learn more about GoogleMaps (via entertaining demos in the form of youtube videos). Interesting experiment not recommend for office hours ;-)

Dynamics of city life, due to foursquare

New York city Livehoods

I assume everybody knows roughly what foursquare is. If not, read up: foursquare.

On the basis of tons of UGC from foursquare, people at the School of Computer Science of Carnegie Mellon University used clustering algorithms to derive from the data so-called urban livehoods. Livehoods are determined by the patterns of people that check-in to them. If many of the same people check-in to two nearby locations, then these locations will likely be part of the same Livehood. Livehoods reveal how the people and places of a city come together to form the dynamic character of local urban areas.

The illustration shown here is from the greater New York city area. Other cities are covered as well. Read more at livehoods dot org.
